Connecticut truck fee in force January 1, 2023
In 2021 Governor Lamont signed into law a Highway Use Fee on trucks traveling on all highways in Connecticut.
The law goes into effect January 1, 2023.
The first Highway Use Fee return is due on or before February 28, 2023.
Any person who operates an eligible motor vehicle on any Connecticut highway is required to pay the fee.
An eligible motor vehicle that has a gross weight of twenty-six thousand pounds or more and carries a classification between Class 8 and Class 13, inclusive, under the Federal Highway Administration vehicle classification system must register for a Highway Use Fee Permit.
Straight trucks are not considered eligible motor vehicle unless they are in combination with a trailer.
The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services has populated an extensive webpage with all of the information carriers need to know about this new law. Included on this page is a schematic and description of eligible motor vehicles along with information on how to register and file a fee.

In addition, DRS has established a dedicated telephone number for questions related to the Highway Use Fee that is available Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., at 860-297-5677.
With the exception of bulk milk tankers carrying milk there is currently no agricultural exemption from the law.
